Top 5 Social Media Behaviors
It is time to embrace the fact that social media is here to stay, and grow. Year-over-year users have increased for platforms like LinkedIn (US users mostly), TikTok (APAC), and Instagram (Europe and US). So then, what social media behaviors should you learn and maintain for the farthest reach — or for any reach, really?
While each platform has its own set of best practices, you must choose the platform and strategy that is right for you and not one that feels forced. With up to 78 percent of 30-49 year olds using social media, it’s important to hone good behaviors.
Read on for five social media behaviors to up-level your efforts.
1. Create a Content Calendar
Content calendars are exactly what they sound like — a calendar that has themes and holds you accountable to that theme. If you know it’s a holiday week or a week with a product launch, plan accordingly. Looking at a physical calendar helps you visually see what your potential clients will see and when they might receive it. Creating good social media behaviors helps set you up for longterm success.
2. Engage with Relevant Hashtags and Accounts
Don’t feel like posting? Taking a break from posting? Or, want to hone your offerings? Engage with people who post the same hashtags as you — after all, that’s what they’re for (adding to a conversation). It’s not enough to just like or save — engage! Add a thoughtful response, a funny quip, or short response that doesn’t overwhelm the thread. In 10-30 minutes per day you’ll glean insight into what others are sharing about your hashtags and show that your account is managed by a real human rather than a mindless company.
3. Engage with Your Followers
Similar to engaging with your hashtags, this social media behavior lets your followers know you care. Platforms like Instagram share the “least interacted with” so you can easily see who needs a little attention from you or your company. They might not be relevant, so don’t force an interaction. Simply engage with your followers so they feel seen and appreciated.
4. Engage with Your Competitors and Their Followers
Although a competitor is a friend by another name, their social media presence is as available to you as yours is to them. Look at their posts, like what makes sense, or leave comments if they’re meaningful. The people they follow or follow are likely public, so take a moment to look through and see if any might be good followers for your brand and/or follow those that are interesting to you. Some social strategies involve not following others, but again, do what’s right for you.
5. Post Consistently
The theme of good social media behavior is consistent posting. If you post once a week, do so consistently. If it’s twice a day, make sure it’s appealing to different audiences and posted at the right time (based on past analytics, of course). At a loss for social or blog ideas? Bonus Social Media Behavior Tip
Write your content from an authentic point of view. Don’t elaborate or embellish your values and offerings. Be who you are from start to finish. Your social media behaviors should be all you, all the time.
